Players talking to referees: Only the team captain may approach the referee during a dead ball, quarter time and at half time. No other players can approach the referees at any point during the game. Any players arguing any decision or using obscene language directly or indirectly in the game will result in a technical foul - 1 shot and posession of the ball from half way for the opposing team.
Every week throughout the main basketball season our referee trainers Marilyn & Sherri will have a new rule of the week for players to focus on - a rule violation they are noticing often that will help upskill our players by understanding the rule correctly. Keep an eye on this page for the current rule of the week, as well as past rules of the week.
The FIBA rule book is available on our Training page, or feel free to ask any of our senior referees outside of a game if you have any questions.
Week 1: 5 Second Rule - The ball must be passed into the court within 5 seconds.
Week 2: Different grades play with a different size basketball:
A, B, C & D Grade Men: Size 7
A, B, C & D Grade Women: Size 6
E Grade Men: Size 6
E Grade Women: Size 5
Miniball: Size 5
Week 3: Subs: Players must call their own subs in to the bench, not the coaches.
Week 4: Approaching The Scorebench: If there is a problem with the scorebench, only the coach may approach on a dead ball and then ask the referee to check the enquiry. Other management may approach the bench during the break at quarter time and at half time. They may not approach the bench any other time to check the score sheet or query the scorebench. Parents and spectators may not approach the scorebench at any point during the game.
Week 5: Zone Defence: No zone defence is allowed for U15 players - they must play man to man defence.
Week 6: Subs after a basket: After a basket is scored in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or extra period, the team who has been scored against may initiate a substitution. The other team may then also make a sub.
Week 7/8: Team Benches: Team A sits to the left and Team B to the right of the scorebench (when seated on the scorebench). Your team may warm up at either end, but you always start the game heading towards the basket you warmed up at.
Week 9 & School Holidays: Defending The Inbound Pass: Due to our court at Archer Stadium being slightly smaller in size, opposition players must allow approximately 1m of space from the outside line when the ball is being passed into the court. This is a local rule and may not apply at other courts.
Week 12: Players talking to referees: Only the team captain may approach the referee during a dead ball, quarter time and at half time. No other players can approach the referees at any point during the game. Any players arguing any decision or using obscene language directly or indirectly in the game will result in a technical foul - 1 shot and posession of the ball from half way for the opposing team.
