Years 5 & 6 - Starts Wednesday 4th November 2020, 5pm - 6pm
Teams will be named from this for the U11 tournament in Invercargill in Dec 2020

Many of you will have seen Ryan O'Rouke behind the camera over the last two years. He volunteers his time as our photographer, capturing moments from ESBA season games, tournaments, and prize givings.

Ryan was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy type 3 when he was 5 years old. At this stage in the progression of his condition Ryan has the ability to drive a vehicle, but this will require hand controls to be installed. Being able to drive will allow Ryan to be an independent member of our community and find a part-time job to start saving for university, where he would like to study accountancy.

We're looking for past and present players from the Gore A & B grade mens and womens competitions to compete in a privately run tournament helping raise funds towards installing hand controls in Ryan's van. This is not an ESBA run event - please send any enquiries to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Our 2020 basketball prizegiving will be held on Friday 28th August at Archer Stadium.

Come down to watch the Secondary B Boys final at 5.00pm (Teams to be confirmed), followed by prizegiving in the main stadium approximately 6.30pm.

See you there!

School trials are being held at schools over the next few weeks. Please keep an eye on your school notice boards for dates. If you are interested in playing basketball please go and see your sports coordinator. If your school does not have a team they can put you in due to numbers, please get in touch with us here at ESBA (027 600 3722) and we will endeavour to put you in a team.

2020 Miniball season will continue as normal with 2 weeks of grading and 8 weeks of competition starting on Monday 7th September, ending Thursday 26th November. There will be no miniball in the September/October school holidays.

2020 U13 Boys & Girls season will continue as normal and we will have trial dates out soon.

As of today, Thursday 14th May 2020, we enter Alert Level 2.

Essentially, for community sport, Level 2 is a 'Get Ready' phase followed by a 'Prepare to Play' phase.

Under the 'Get Ready' phase we are putting together robust health & safety measures in regards to contact tracing and sanitation measures. As Archer Stadium is undergoing maintenance, it is currently unavailable for bookings. We will update Facebook and our website when stadium bookings resume.

The 'Prepare to Play' phase means players and sports providers can start training in bubbles of ten people or less, but only within a controlled environment with the required health & safety measures in place. This will allow time for our administrator to communicate with teams / sports coordinators and for the committee to get a competition up and running. Sport NZ will indicate when bubble restriction may be loosened, and we will advise when this happens.

The 'Prepare to Play' period will give players time to return to training before the competitive season begins. This will help prevent injury.

Please be patient, stay well and train hard. We will see you all soon.

The 2020 Main season will begin the week of 28th April 2020 at Archer Basketball Stadium for 12 weeks. Senior teams will run through the school holidays.

The 2020 Secondary Schools A & Secondary School B Grades will also start on the 28th April 2020 at Archer Basketball Stadium for 12 weeks.

Finger food provided. Come along and join in the fun!!

Friday 5th July 2019, 6pm

The 2019 season welcomes changes to the school grades previously known as C, D & E grade. C & D grade are replaced by 'Secondary Schools A' and 'Secondary Schools B', with E grade replaced by 'Intermediate' grade. While these grades still have a suggested age group, it allows players to play in the Secondary A or B competition best suited to their level, at the committees discretion.

The 2019 Secondary Schools A & B Grades will also start the season 3 weeks earlier on the 25th March 2019, with the competition running for 14 weeks. As our U15, U17 & U19 rep team tournaments are all held early in the year, this gives our players game time before tournament. 'Secondary Schools A' players may also be eligible to play in our open seniors A grade competition, at the committees discretion.

Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th July our local U13 boys tournament was held at Archer Stadium in Gore. The boys put in a massive effort both days winning one of our games 68-20, and not quite getting there in the other 2 games with losses of 30 points respectively. Fantastic to see some of our hard work at training pay off.

With plenty to work on we continued training weekly before setting off for our next tournament at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin - Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th September. We noticed a large improvement in the team since Gore tournament, particularly in our defense. Dunedin being our first away tournament was a great experience for our team who had a blast with playing 1v1 at a nearby school until dark, multiple trips to the dairy, time relaxing at the beach after games, and a swim and hydroslide at Moana Pool to finish the tournament. Thank You Basketball Otago for a great tournament.

With an invite to Canterbury Basketball's B grade tournament we selected a team of 7 and travelled to Christchurch Friday 28th September for 5 games over the Saturday and Sunday. Our team took this to a new level and were highly competitive in all our games showing some fantastic combinations on the court and posting our highest game scores.

Miniball Holiday Training Programme For Years 3-6

Players talking to referees: Only the team captain may approach the referee during a dead ball, quarter time and at half time. No other players can approach the referees at any point during the game. Any players arguing any decision or using obscene language directly or indirectly in the game will result in a technical foul - 1 shot and posession of the ball from half way for the opposing team.

Every week throughout the main basketball season our referee trainers Marilyn & Sherri will have a new rule of the week for players to focus on - a rule violation they are noticing often that will help upskill our players by understanding the rule correctly. Keep an eye on this page for the current rule of the week, as well as past rules of the week.

The FIBA rule book is available on our Training page, or feel free to ask any of our senior referees outside of a game if you have any questions.
